Most of us are not aware of what an actuary does and the importance of the role in an insurance company. Undoubtedly, an actuarial job may seem quite boring, but it is one of the most challenging and high-paying jobs. If you are a math or statistics genius, then this may be the perfect career for you. The actuary's main responsibility is assessing/quantifying risk and developing means of mitigating risks. Actuaries are largely known for their work in the insurance and pension fields, where they design financially secure benefit programs to protect customers. Let's take a look at the role, certification process and career advancement of an actuary.

What is an Actuary?
Actuaries are the financial engineers of the insurance industry, specializing in either life and health insurance or property and casualty insurance. Basically, they formulate probability tables or employ highly advanced dynamic modeling methods that predict the probability that a potential event will generate a claim. From these tables, they ascertain the amount of money needed for claims payouts.

Different actuaries have different roles and may work for insurance companies or consulting firms, as well as in other businesses. They may be involved with devising a new retirement program for a company or even calculating the impact of laws banning car-cellphone use in automobile losses and determining suitable rate discounts. For instance, in property insurance, property and casualty actuaries compute the number of claims likely to result from natural catastrophes. The actuaries take into account the property's location, construction and several other factors before determining the premium.

Similarly, the figures calculated by actuaries ensure that insurance companies charge enough for premiums to cover predicted costs. In addition, actuaries have to make sure that the premium charged for that insurance is competitive with that charged by competing insurance companies. Educational Background
If you are interested in becoming an actuary, you are required to earn an undergraduate degree in statistics, mathematics, finance or actuarial science. There are many schools and colleges that offer programs in actuarial science. Before becoming a fully qualified actuary, individuals must pass examinations given by either the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) over a period of five to ten years. Students are normally allowed to take the first two examinations while they are still in college. After graduation, students often obtain jobs as entry-level actuaries and work through the certification process while simultaneously gaining some experience in the field. In return, employers may pay the examination fees and provide extra study time to their employees. As actuaries pass exams, they are compensated with pay raises.

RARE BABY WITHOUT ANY SKIN BORN

In an extremely rare case, a baby girl with a severe congenital disorder and near-total missing external body skin, was born at a city hospital on Saturday. In medical parlance, this condition is called Harelquin Ichthyosis. A 23-year-old woman from Amravati gave birth to the girl at Lata Mangeshkar Medical College and Hospital. While speaking to Hindustan Times, Dr Yash Banait, a child specialist at the hospital said the baby was born with a congenital disorder and that this kind of disorder occurs because of mutation in the genes. The baby requires proper miniaturization. Petroleum jelly and coconut oil serves good for this miniaturization. Nutritional rehabilitation has to be undertaken regularly, he said. “Harlequin Ichthyosis is a very rare severe genetic skin disease that cause thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis. In such cases, the child’s whole body is encased in an ‘armour’ of thick white plates of skin separated with deep cracks. In addition, the eyes, ears, private parts and the appendages may be abnormally contracted,” said obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Avinash Banait. The overall incidence of Harlequin Ichthyosis is 1 in 300,000 births, he said. The doctors at the hospital will diagnose the congenital deformities on Monday. “There is no skin on the body, so skin grafting is not a possibility. But the baby hasn’t developed any breathing problems lest she would have required to be kept on ventilation,” said Dr Yash Banait.

Malaysia Airlines owns two subsidiary airlines: Firefly and MASwings. Firefly operates scheduled flights from its two home bases Penang International Airport and Subang International Airport. The airline focuses on tertiary cities. MASwings focuses on inter-Borneo flights. Malaysia Airlines has a freighter fleet operated by MASkargo, which manages freighter flights and aircraft cargo-hold capacity for all Malaysia Airlines' passenger flights.

The airline began as Malayan Airways Limited and flew its first commercial flight in 1947. A few years after Singapore's independence, the airline's assets were divided in 1972 to form Singaporean flag carrier Singapore Airlines and Malaysian flag carrier Malaysian Airline System.[4]

Despite numerous awards from aviation industry and recognition from the World Travel Awards as the leading airline in and to Asia (2010–11, 2013) [4] the airline struggled to cut costs to compete with new, low-cost carriers in the region since the early 2000s.[5] In 2013, the airline initiated a turnaround plan after large losses beginning in 2011 and cut routes to prominent, but unprofitable, long-haul destinations, such as the Americas (Los Angeles and Buenos Aires) and South Africa.[6] Malaysia Airlines also began an internal restructuring and intended to sell units such as engineering and pilot training.[6]

In 2014, Malaysia Airlines lost two aircraft—Flight 370 and Flight 17—less than five months apart, exacerbating the airline's financial troubles and leading to the renationalisation of the airline. Prior to 2014, MAS had one of the world's best safety records—just two fatal accidents in 68 years of operation,[7] including the hijacking in 1977 of Flight 653 that resulted in 100 casualties.
